Thanksgiving Stories and Traditions

I’m getting really excited for the holiday next week. I can’t wait to eat a ton of turkey and pie…not necessarily in that order. I’ve been thinking of what kind of traditions I want to start with my family and I think a girls night out the night before would be a ton of fun. I think some girl time is called for (because you all know that somehow all the boys end up outside playing football while dinner is miraculously getting cooked inside.) We’ll see if I can put something together…maybe a movie night, maybe a scrapbooking night, maybe a game night. Anyway, I was looking for some fun family traditions online and came across this cute story on CNN and wanted to share…

Brandi Hofmann of Minonk, Illinois
When I was 40 weeks pregnant with my first son, I visited almost daily at my grandparents’ house. Mainly I would just visit with Grampa who was sick at the time so Gramma could get some things done around the house.

One day he told me about a Thanksgiving morning back in the mid-60’s. He had just let their dog Caesar outside so he could do his business in their small town. Usually the dog came right back but on this morning, Grampa had to yell for Caesar to come home. After a few minutes of yelling for the dog, it finally came home carrying an entire Thanksgiving turkey in its mouth. Someone must have baked it and set it outside to cool off. My Grampa took the bird and buried it in the yard and never told a soul (my mom and her sisters would have told someone and it would’ve been all over town) until he told me more than 35 years later. He died a few days after he told me the story and each Thanksgiving I am asked to retell the story after dinner.

Time for New Dishes

Seth emptied our dishwasher yesterday and he pulled out a broken dinner plate. You would think stoneware would last more than just a few years, but that is our fourth broken plate. (And none of them have been dropped. They just crack right down the middle. I think they do it for fun.) So I need to start collecting some new dinnerware. I’m thinking of going with all white dinner plates, salad plates and bowls. That way I can buy some fun things that I can switch out with the seasons. Wouldn’t this plate be fun to have for Christmas? And wouldn’t the bowls be fun in the spring?

On My Christmas List, II

I got a letterpress calendar from ilee papergoods last year. It is so beautiful. This year’s is even better. I want. (Unfortunately it is sold out right now. I’m hoping she’ll make some more before Christmas or Santa will have to perform some magic so I can have this.)

If I Ever Become a Famous Singer…

Sesame Street is the first place I’d go. I love these clips.

On My Christmas List

After four years of marriage I have found that the best way to get something that I want from my husband is to tell him what I want. I know; I’m pretty dang smart. So this is something I came across at ZGallerie . A travel jewelry case. I want.

And right now all accessories are 15% off. Yea!

Back for Good

I just got back from visiting my sister in Washington D.C. I had a wonderful trip. Some of the highlights:

  • Meeting my niece Lucy for the first time.
  • Taking my niece Jane trick-or-treating for her first time. (She thinks Halloween means candy.)
  • Seeing the amazing fall colors in Virginia’s western country side.
  • Experiencing the difference of being in a "swing state" right before the election. (So many ads and lawn signs!)
  • Becoming a card carrying member of the Library of Congress.
  • Visiting Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. He is such an interesting man.
  • Hanging out with Tiffany and Donny until the wee hours of the night.
  • Hiking along the Potomac River on the Billy Goat Trail.

I may try to post some pictures later…if I feel up to it! And, yes, this is my last vacation of the year.
