My Classified

I posted this on KSL.com last night and have already received a reply. I’ll let you know the outcome…

There just aren’t enough Saturdays in a month! We have a bunch of projects that need to get done and are looking for bids on what you would charge to do them ALL.

List of projects

1. Replace two outside doors with pre-hung doors of the same size that we will buy.

2. Make kitchen faucet work. (We just bought a new one and hooked it up. Alas, it doesn’t work. We think it is user error.)

3. Complete gluing down last 4×4 section of wood floor. Not many tricky cuts at all. Tongue and groove.

4. Make bathroom light work. This is the trickiest one (I think.) We have replaced many lights before, so we are pretty sure it isn’t user error. This time we replaced the light, which was working just fine, with a new one from Lowes, and it just won’t work. We have tried multiple times and even replaced the switch.

Please e-mail me at patriciadawn8[at]yahoo.com with your bid on what you would charge to complete these projects. Please include:

1. Cost

2. How much time you think it will take to complete all these projects. (Your best guess.)

3. 2 references

4. Contact info.

Antique Map Drawers–Organization for a Craft Room

I just found these antique map drawers on KSL.com. They would be perfect to store scrapbook pages or papers in and actually ad character to a craft room. Too bad it’s $125. I’ll have to keep my eye out for something like this at yard sales.

Home Decorating in Utah Tip 2: Just Buy Curtains Already!

One of the easiest ways to make a room look more put together is to hang curtains. However, for some reason people are so, so scared to do so. Why? Nobody knows. Curtains can be super cheap if you want them to be. AND they are easy to make. Maybe someday I’ll post a tutorial on how to make them.

One of the reasons my mom hasn’t bought curtains for her front room is that she is scared to make a mistake. If you aren’t sure what you want and don’t want to spend a lot of money on a mistake, just look for some inexpensive place holders. It will make your home look so much better while you take time deciding exactly what you want. Here are some tips and places to shop for inexpensive curtains:

  • Look at your color scheme and decide what neutral color will go best with the room and try to find some solid panels in that color scheme to hang.
  • Don’t skimp on panels. Make sure to buy enough panels to cover the window without being stretched too tight. It looks kinda cheap.
  • Make sure your curtain rod is a foot or two wider than your window so your curtains can hang to the side of the window when they are open. This way you can see out your entire window, not just the middle of it.
  • Look at JCPenney. They have a good selection of solid colors and they seem to be on a half price sale every other weekend. Go shopping now, wait to buy until they are on sale.
  • Another great place to look is IKEA. You can buy their curtain panels unfinished and extra long so you can hang the rod up higher than the window so that the window looks bigger. That’s always a plus.
  • Just buy some cheap material and finish the edges with your sewing machine or an iron-on hemming strip (can be purchased at Roberts or Joanns or any craft store). Then hang the homemade curtains on your rod with curtain rings. (The 10 pack below is from IKEA and costs $4.99. Not too shabby.) I bought some material for $3.75 per yard and made myself bedroom curtains for under $25. Even though they don’t have a liner on the back they will work great until I can afford to buy some nice curtains.

Kitchen Progress

This past weekend we made a little progress with our kitchen remodel. I finished sanding some patches on our walls while Seth tried to hook up our new faucet. Once all the taping, drilling, screwing, praying, and welding  (not really) were completed we crossed our fingers and prepared to see if our efforts would pay off. Alas, when we turned the knob to see if his nifty installation worked only a small trickle of water came out. We were thwarted again! However, there is a good side; we did find out that the drain pipes don’t leak. Hallelujah.

This is the faucet we purchased from IKEA. It looks pretty even though it doesn’t work.

Happy Pioneer Day!

I’m in the midst of planning a last minute BBQ! I’m excited to eat and play outdoors. It makes it feel like summer. I’m off to a wedding tomorrow, so I’ll be posting again on Monday.

The Mid-Project Blues

The last couple of months I have been so busy that it has been really hard to get my kitchen up and running and functional. So hard in fact that absolutely no work as been done on is since April. So, I’ve been living out of a mini kitchen in my attic (but using the fridge two floors down) and just hoping that once my big project at work was complete I would be able to get to it. Now, two weeks after said project I am feeling an amazing amount of frustration. I just want my kitchen to be done. I want all my Saturdays back that I spent working so that I can put them into my pathetic looking house. I need to paint it, put in a new sink, and finish the flooring among many, many other things.

So, on Monday I called a handyman and got a quote. For about $300 he’ll come and finish quite a bit of my house (no painting). I think I’m just going to do it. I’ll keep you updated.

Fabulous Routine

I am happy to announce my traveling is done until August! Vacations are such necessary things, but it is nice to get back into a routine. So it’s back to workin’ 9-5 and dreaming of having my home remodel done soon! (Sigh. If only I could use my kitchen.)

When we were in San Francisco we biked across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was the highlight of the trip.

This was the most beautiful lavender farm in Oregon. But it really don’t compare to the lavender farm I work for right here in the state of Utah! We are lucky.

I’ll be back…

I’m going to be working around the clock the next couple days trying to make an event at the Lavender Farm go off without a hitch. Wish me luck. I’ll be writing on My Pemberley on Monday.

Lavender Days–Utah’s Most Spectacular Festival

Can I just tell you that event planning is hard?!? I am currently planning a lavender festival, where we are planning on having over 10,000 people show up, with just a few other incredibly talented women. And let me just say we are swamped! But it will all be worth it in the end. There is going to be entertainment (professional jousting, live bands, a sharp shooter, medieval characters, a western shootout, etc.), educational classes (gardening, fitness, cooking), food vendors (lavender lemonade, wraps, burgers, Navajo tacos, flat bread sandwiches, etc.), and a ton of activities (lavender crafts, pony rides, paddle boat rides, rock climbing, blow up toys, rides, etc.).

Some of the most popular activities we do are parties for children. The one for the girls is hosted by the lavender fairy and one for the boys is hosted by our knight of the order of the lavender dragon. I’m having a blast planning everything, and I hope y’all will want to come out and visit! (Unfortunately all this planning is not going to leave me too much time to explore new home decorating stores in Utah. Come July, however, I’ll be all over the place!)

Lavender Days is June 27 & 28. If you have any questions about this fun event just let me know! I have all the answers (or at least know who does).

Have a Wonderful, Long Weekend

I’m excited about this long weekend! I’ll be attending a parade down in Ephraim on Saturday and a 5K in American Fork on Monday…all in the name of work! We are promoting Lavender Days, June 27 and 28.

I’m sure many of you are planning on working around the house this weekend. It seems like long weekends either equal camping or home improvement, and since this weekend calls for rain many of you are probably staying home. Good luck no matter what you are doing! I’ll be back Tuesday.
